![]() Road trips in the Model Y didn’t approach the maximum possible miles on a charge because high speeds are less efficient for EVs compared with slower city driving, but highway trips did produce the longest distances between charging. This is how we recommend EV buyers live with their vehicles rarely does the Model Y’s battery drop below 15%. But that’s rare because the Model Y mostly charges overnight at home, starting the day with an 80% state of charge and doesn’t drop too far from that before it’s plugged in at night. We’ve gone 200-plus miles simply driving around town without charging. What’s interesting about the top five results above is that they weren’t all from road trips. At an 80% battery charge, we’re starting with 260 miles of rated range. View all 2021 Tesla Model Y models for sale near 60606Īlso contributing to lower observed range is that we mostly keep our maximum charge percentage set at 80% to protect long-term battery health. Cold temperatures wreak havoc on driving range, and our Model Y has been driven through frigid Midwest temperatures since we took delivery of it in November. This doesn’t come as a huge surprise, however, and to a degree would likely be true of any EV driven in conditions similar to ours. ![]() In our experience, the EPA and predicted ranges haven’t often matched. The Model Y has a separate energy display submenu in the touchscreen that shows predicted range, which can vary based on different factors. It’s important to note that in the Tesla, the primary range reading on the center touchscreen’s homepage uses EPA-rated range and is not a prediction based on driving history and recent consumption. ![]() 2021 Tesla Model Y Software V11.0 | photo by Joe Bruzek Averaging three-quarters of the Model Y’s 326 miles of rated range works out to just 244.5 miles. Our range efficiency over the life of the vehicle, which compares actual miles traveled versus how much rated range was used, is only 75%, according to TeslaFi. It’s used in our daily lives as a commuter, road tripper and family car. At the moment, we’re not actively trying to extract the most range from our car, but are instead living with it as we would any other vehicle in our long-term fleet. Traveling around 200 to 240 miles between charging might not seem very far considering our Model Y’s EPA-rated range, and you’d be correct. The longest we’ve traveled without charging is 241 miles, according to the TeslaFi data logging software we’ve enabled on our car. We now have more than 6,000 miles on our Model Y, including multiple road trips around the Midwest, so let’s review the farthest we’ve driven without plugging in. One of the many questions we hoped to answer by owning a Tesla Model Y was: How far could we drive between charging? While our 2021 Model Y has an EPA-estimated 326 miles of range, real-world driving range varies by ambient weather conditions, charging limits, driving style and many other factors. ![]()
